DETROIT – Judge Vonda Evans said Tuesday she will appoint a new set of attorneys for Bob Bashara, setting back the trial date.
The Grosse Pointe Park man is charged with first-degree murder in connection with his wife's 2012 slaying. He said he wasn't getting case information in a timely manner and put together a list of possible attorneys he would consider to replace his current counsel. He presented it to Judge Evans during the Tuesday afternoon hearing.
Judge Evans decided to allow Bashara to be appointed two new attorneys. She said this means there will not be a trial in March because the new attorneys will have to be brought up to speed. The prosecution said they are worried the trial might start as late as October 2014. However, the judge said June, July or August is more likely.
Jane Bashara was found strangled on Jan. 25, 2012, inside her SUV that was parked in a Detroit alley, a few miles from the couple's home.
Joseph Gentz, a handyman who worked for Bob Bashara, has pleaded guilty to killing her, but saying he did so at her husband's behest.
