Warren Mott High School student rescued from pool

16-year-old resuscitated by teacher, in stable condition

WARREN, Mich. – A 16-year-old Warren Mott High School student was rushed to the hospital Monday after he was pulled from the pool unconscious.

In a statement, the school district said the sophomore lost consciousness during gym class and sank to the bottom of the pool. A CPR-certified teacher rescued the student from the pool and resuscitated him.

The student's friends were first to see him sink to the bottom of the pool. They notified gym teacher Russ Shifferd. It's not clear how long the teen was underwater.

"The swim instructor dove in, got him out of the water, performed mouth-to-mouth on him," said Don Tharrett, Warren Battalion Chief.

The school is off 12 Mile Road near Ryan Road. Warren has a fire station right across the street. Rescue crews arrived at the school in 2 minutes and continued CPR on the boy. The teen was taken to St. John Macomb-Oakland hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.

Students say they are not surprised that Mr. Shifferd acted quickly to save him.

"He's helpful. He's caring. He's loving, he's a really funny guy, too, if really you get to know him," said Vanessa Kizy, a junior at the school.

Students who have taken the swim class say swimmers are classified according to their skill levels. Only the most advanced swimmers are allowed in the deep end.
