MT. MORRIS TWP., Mich. – Bloomfield Hills schools are dealing with the tragic loss of a teacher.
The teacher, Shelley Lazarus, from Eastover Elementary school was killed in a crash and her husband, who also worked for the district, was injured.
"The entire school was her classroom and she was there for every student in the building," said Superintendent Robert Glass.
It happened Sunday night on Interstate 75 in Mount Morris Township, just north of Flint.
The car that Shelley and Eric Lazarus were in slowed for traffic, but the car behind them didn't stop, and read-ended them.
Shelley Lazarus died at the scene. Her husband is in critical condition.
The driver of the car that hit them is in jail. He reportedly was driving with a suspended license, and police believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.
The superintendent of Bloomfield Hills schools says counselors and social workers will be available throughout the week for students.
