Video shows SMART bus slam into multiple vehicles in West Bloomfield

Police say bus driver told officers he fell asleep right before collision

WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. – Video shows a SMART bus slam into several vehicles Oct. 21, 2014 on Maple Road between Middlebelt and Inkster roads in West Bloomfield.

West Bloomfield police say the bus was traveling westbound on Maple Road when it struck several vehicles in the westbound lane. At least one vehicle was vaulted into oncoming traffic. It was struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound on Maple Road.

Police said two people were transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The bus driver is a 65-year-old man who, police say, told officers he had fallen asleep right before the crash. He tested negative for alcohol. The video shows him try to slam on the brakes and swerve, but it was too late.

There was only one passenger on the bus at the time of the crash. She was not injured.

The driver is expected to appear in court Wednesday.
