HAMTRAMCK, Mich. – Maxwell Garbarino resigned as Hamtramck police chief, effective immediately, on Wednesday.
"I am proud of the service and leadership I provided to the city of Hamtramck and its residents," Garbarino said in a written statement released by the city. "I believe I leave the police department in a better condition than when I became police chief. However, I believe the timing is right for me to now pursue other career opportunities."

Garbarino, who had been chief since 2012, was placed on paid administrative leave last week after city manager Karina Powell said she was conducting an unspecified investigation centered on Garbarino.
"On behalf of the city of Hamtramck, I want to thank Mr. Garbarino for his service to the city and wish him the best of luck in future endeavors," Powell said in the same statement.
