Gun found at Southfield-Lathrup High School

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – According to a letter to parents from Southfield Public Schools Superintendent Lynda Wood, a student brought a gun to Southfield-Lathrup High School Thursday.

The gun was not loaded.

Wood said the situation was dealt with "swiftly and immediately to ensure the safety of our students." It does not appear the school was placed under lock down at any point during the school day because of the incident.

According to Wood's letter, the district is responding to the incident by "increasing the presence of security officers in the school during morning arrival."

Southfield Schools Public Relations and Marketing Manager Jacqueline Robinson issued the following statement about the situation: "Southfield Public Schools has a "No Tolerance" policy for weapon possession and will not allow any infractions. Our Code of Conduct requires that students found guilty of violations be permanently expelled from the school district. We will abide by our policy. In addition, the district is partnering with the Southfield Police Department to implement intermittent, unannounced police sweeps and to increase police presence and patrol in and around the school. It is our commitment that Southfield Public Schools continues to enjoy a positive, safe environment that fosters learning and growth in all our students."

The Southfield Police will also begin conducting unannounced sweeps and locker searches with police dogs.
