Investigators call Southwest Detroit apartment fire 'suspicious'

No injuries reported in fire

DETROIT – Investigators are calling an overnight apartment fire in Southwest Detroit "suspicious" after it forced its residents to race to safety.

Firefighters say it's the third time in six months that they've been called to the building, and the fire keeps starting in the same unit.

There are no injuries reported in the incident and only one unit was completely destroyed. Authorities say that unit was vacant.

The rest of the people who live in the building were forced to evacuate, but they are back inside.

Firefighters from the Detroit Fire Department got to the two-story apartment building in the 8300 block of Rathbone Street at around 3:30 a.m.

Residents said the scene when firefighters arrived was chaotic.

"Me and my kids were sleeping and I heard a loud noise and I'm scared," said Katie Reeves, who escaped the fire. "So my door is metal, so I looked through the peephole thing and there was smoke so I looked out and the whole house was burning."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
