Once the SUV was on the side of the road, the driver jumped over a seat and into the back of the SUV before he tried to get out through a door, police said.

The trooper tried to arrest the driver, but the driver swung at the trooper's face and helmet, police said.

During the struggle, the trooper and the driver both fell to the ground.

A retired trooper who was in the area noticed what was happening and got involved to help contain the driver.

Once the 25-year-old driver was in custody, police said a check of his identification revealed a warrant for a probation violation out of Monroe County. The driver is a Newport resident.

He's being held in the Monroe County Jail.

Police said additional charges are being sought for the freeway incident through the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.

Police said there was also a woman in the passenger seat of the SUV. She was not involved in the fight.
