DETROIT – The contracts up for bid account for $200 million in business on the $450 million Detroit Red Wings arena project.
They've pledged 30 percent of the dollar value and 51 percent of the jobs will go to Detroiters and Detroit-based businesses.
Sixty-five percent of the business -- about $115 million thus far -- has gone to companies certified by the city as Detroit-based or headquartered. Everything from demolition, excavation, foundation work and even elevators already are lifting the local economy. However, they are big contracts for big companies.
However, Tuesday's outreach offers more bite-sized pieces of the project. It's all about the little guy.
"Hear about the work scope. Hear about the timeline, to understand if it's something that they can participate in. If they feel like they do not have the capacity right now, come out and meet some of the other businesses," said Douglas Diggs, of Heritage Development Services.
Everything from acoustical treatments, landscaping, displays, asphalt, furnishings, appliances, and even hydro-therapy pools for aching hockey players, will be offered in a $200 million package.
"So tomorrow we'll be talking about drywall. We'll be talking about refrigeration. We'll be talking about billboards, scoreboards, landscaping, metal doors, metal fixtures, handrails," said Diggs.
Detroit-based businesses are invited to arrive between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. and the Motor City Casino Hotel. All other businesses are invited between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

More than 40 different opportunities will be available.
