Pyrotechnics expert dies in home explosion

BRIDGEWATER TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 79-year-old man died when his home exploded in Bridgewater Township on Saturday morning, according to authorities.

The explosion happened on Burmeister Road around 3:30 a.m.

Elwood Hansen, the homeowner, was killed in the explosion.

Hansen was known as a pyrotechnics expert. He sold and stored fireworks in the old fieldstone house. Police say he was a licensed dealer.

The home was completely leveled.

The force of the explosion was so great that the doors were blasted open across the street.

Investigators said no fireworks were involved in the explosion and family friends said he had been working on the furnace in the home when the explosion happened.

Michigan State Police are investigating.
