DETROIT – Detroit Police Chief James Craig said two people are in custody in connection with a shooting that killed a 7-year-old girl and seriously hurt her 8-year-old friend.
Craig said the "senseless" shooting Sunday night at a home on Steel Street stemmed from a domestic situation.
“There was some type of argument, we don’t know over what," Craig said.
Police said after the argument broke out, someone left and returned with a gun.
Family members identified the 7-year-old as Chanell Berry.
Her friend, Ellen Garjo, remains in critical condition.
“People get to argue, but they don’t get to use this type of response," Craig said.
A police source said the two suspects in custody are siblings, and are being uncooperative with the investigation.
“Just because you have a gun doesn’t make you a man. It makes you a person with a gun. For this to happen, it’s just senseless. It’s terrible,” said Assistant Detroit Police Chief Steve Dolunt. “We’re going to do what we can to get these people.”
