Neighbors near one residential intersection in Canton are concerned about how many drivers disobey its stop signs, and they have the video to prove it.
“People say Ford Road and Haggerty is bad, I say Hanford and Willow Creek is worse. It’s downright scary,” said Lauren Tank.
Tank, her husband and three children have a front row seat to the three stop signs that are posted at Hanford Road and Willow Creek Drive. They also have a front row seat to the drivers who run them.
“It’s a three-way stop and people are constantly blowing by the stop signs, and sometimes speeding through,” said Tank. “Locals take Hannford to avoid congestion on Ford Road, but this is a neighborhood.”
To get proof, Tank's husband took cell phone video of drivers at the intersection.
“It was 21 videos, 11 minutes of footage. Almost every single car did not stop. It’s shocking,” said Tank. “They are always running the stop signs, but weekends are by far the worst for it.”
The Tank family reached out to the Canton Police Department, who responded to their concerns. This week, a radar sign was put on Hanford Road, along with an occasional patrol car. But Tank is looking for something more permanent.
“At this point, we’ll take anything, blinking lights, speed bumps, anything that will get people to learn their lesson. I can’t even let my kids go outside by themselves,” she said.
Lauren’s neighbor, Karen Howland, has lived across the street for 15 years. She puts out her own orange cones and flags at the end of her driveway to hopefully get drivers attentions.
“We’ve thought about moving over this,” said Howland. “It’s been going on for as long as I can remember, sure, the radar is helpful but it doesn’t log when people don’t stop.”
Canton police Sgt. Jim Harrison told Local 4 a selective enforcement plan has been put in place for a two-week period. Patrol cars will monitor drivers daily, gather statistics for research.
Harrison said while the residents are concerned, there hasn’t been an accident in that intersection for the last five years.
