Suspect named after man killed during child's birthday party at Melvindale entertainment center

Officials search for Alexander Carter, 23, in death of Sean Key, 45

MELVINDALE, Mich. – Police have named a suspect after a man was shot and killed at an entertainment center Saturday night.

The shooting happened around 7 p.m. Saturday at Play Atlantis at 19400 Allen Road in Melvindale.

Police said there were two separate parties in the banquet rooms and that there was some type of dispute. Someone left and came back with a gun.

Police named Lamar Alexander Carter, 23, as the suspect Sunday night.

Sean Key (pictured), 45, was shot in the head, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A woman celebrating her grandson's ninth birthday said it was sheer panic following the shooting. The Detroit grandmother said the 9-year-old boy thought his father had been shot.

The grandmother said two women started fighting near her table. One of the women was holding a baby. That child fell during the fight, which escalated the confrontation.

Immediately following the shooting, customers started running out the door, along with the shooter.

Key was the father of two adults and a baby girl. He had worked as a mechanic at a Dearborn facility for more than 20 years. His family said he died protecting others.

As police search for Carter, they said he should be considered armed and dangerous.

Police said they contacted his family in an effort to get him to turn himself in.
