YPSILANTI, Mich. – The owner of an Ypsilanti pet store is asking for the public's help after a Yorkie-poo puppy was stolen Wednesday.
“They busted open the padlock, took a hammer to the glass door and appeared to just walk by the cash register,” Pet City Pets owner Stu Collins said. “The only thing that was missing was the one puppy.”
Collins has run Pet City Pets and Pet City Grooming on Ecorse Road in Ypsilanti for 27 years, and no one has ever stolen one of his beloved animals.
“We leave the cash register open at the end of the night so if someone breaks in, they can just take the cash,” Collins said. “But all the money was there. This person was after this puppy.”
Collins found the empty cage Thursday morning when he opened the store. Ypsilanti police said the break-in happened sometime between 7:00 p.m. Wednesday and 9:00 a.m. Thursday.
“When we came into the back room her cage doors were open,” Collins said. “The worst part is a family was supposed to pick her up and take her home that day, but they ended up buying a different dog.”
Collins said store employees nicknamed the $699 Yorkie-poo Tiny Tim and hope he’s in a safe home. The pet store does have surveillance cameras, but the system has been broken for weeks.
Police said they don’t have any leads.
