The Great Lakes Water Authority released the following statement:
"This morning, around 5:30 a.m. a fire occurred within a sludge conveyor belt in the plant incinerator 2 complex of the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), operated by the Great Lakes Water Authority. At the time the fire occurred the area was fully staffed and all employees were safely and immediately evacuated from the area. The Detroit Fire Department (DFD) was called and quickly arrived, containing the fire within an hour. All WWTP employees are accounted for and no injuries have been reported. Additionally, there is no environmental risk due to the fire.
The fire did not affect operations, and the WWTP continues to run and treat wastewater. The fire is now under control, however DFD will remain on site for the following hours to ensure that there aren’t any lingering hot spots. This is normal procedure at an industrial facility.
The WWTP has taken all precautions to ensure that employees and the community remain safe, and the GLWA has developed a recovery plan, which will continue to be revised as necessary.
Updates will be provided as new information becomes available."
