Downtown Detroit building on Griswold Street coming down

Bedrock scheduled to demolish fire-damaged, blighted building

DETROIT – Bedrock is expected to demolish a fire-damaged, blighted building Thursday on Griswold Street in downtown Detroit.

The building at 1416 Griswold St. in Detroit's Capitol Park neighborhood is to come down starting at 7 a.m. Thursday.

Bedrock said it acquired the building in 2015, which is a three-story structure between Grand River Avenue and Clifford Street, 1 block west of Woodward Avenue.

The building's removal is the first blighted commercial building Bedrock has demolished in the Central Business District. Bedrock said it will make room for a new mixed-use residential building to be constructed from the ground-up on this site and the adjoining vacant lot at 28 West Grand River Ave.

The building is expected to be demolished by excavation equipment that will "claw" the building down, rather than implode it, Bedrock said.

Traffic diversions and safety precautions are in place. Bedrock said nearby businesses, residents and visitors should expect some demolition-related noise for a short period of time Thursday morning.
