28-year-old man killed in 5th shooting since late Friday

3 killed, 2 injured in separate shootings

DETROIT – A 28-year-old man was shot and killed Saturday afternoon on Detroit’s west side.

The shooting was reported about 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of Pembroke Avenue and Prest Street.

The victim was in his silver BMW when he was shot several times, authorities said. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Investigators are trying to piece together how many guns were used.

The victim was Juan Collins'  28 year-old friend.

"I had a lot of love for him," Collins said. "I don't know why anybody would do this. We (are) definitely going to miss him. He was a real close friend to us."

The investigation shows that a green pickup truck with three men inside pulled up alongside the BMW before shots were fired, some of them at close range. It's unclear if there was a verbal exchange before the shooting.

Collins said he had just talked to his friend in his new car two days ago.

"He pulled up on me in the same car a couple of days ago," Collins said. "He was talking about God blessing him and turning his life around and everything."

Collins' friend was the third person to die in a matter of hours.

Police are also investigating a series of shootings late Friday night into Saturday morning in Detroit in which two men were killed and two others were injured.

There were four separate shootings overnight, two on the east side and two on the west side.

The first shooting was reported just before 11 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Nashville and Strasburg streets. Police were called about someone lying in the middle of the road. A 25-year-old man was found with a gunshot wound.  He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police were called to a car accident in the 5500 block of Pacific Avenue at about 12:15 a.m. Saturday. The vehicle had hit a tree and a 50-year-old driver was on the ground outside the vehicle. He was taken to the hospital where doctors found that he had been shot twice. He is in critical condition.

A 23-year-old man heard shots as he was leaving a banquet hall on the 3600 block of East Forest Avenue at 2:17 a.m. He felt pain and realized that he had been shot. The man is in critical condition.

A fourth man was shot as he was walking out of a Coney Island in the 16000 block of Warren Avenue at about 3:30 a.m. The 43-year-old man was shot multiple times and was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No descriptions of the shooters in the first three incidents were provided.

In the last shooting, police said the shooters took off on foot. One man was described as black with a dark complexion, in his 30s, wearing a skull cap and a dark hooded sweater. The second shooter was described only as a black man.

"This needs to stop," Collins said. "Out here in the city, with people dying like this, it needs to stop."
