DETROIT – Two dozen friends and family members gathered near I-94 just past Mt. Elliott Monday to remember 23-year-old Demarco Wilson. His mother, Marilyn Davis, still can’t believe he’s gone.
"He was an outgoing person," Davis said. "He would make everybody laugh. He was just a good-hearted person."
Demarco and his brother, Demonte, were back-seat passengers when the driver of the Chevrolet Trailblazer in which they were riding lost control of the vehicle and crashed. Demarco was killed and Demonte is in critical condition at a local hospital.
Demarco's fiance, Myriah Stewart, said she was traveling behind him in a different car when the crash happened.
"I had to see him flung from the car," she said. "I had to watch my baby take his last breath. He was still breathing. The EMS didn’t pick him up. He was still breathing. He was humming to everything I said and now he’s gone."
The family said Demarco didn’t have insurance. They’re desperate for help with his funeral expenses and for help with the son he leaves behind. His son turned two months old the day his father died.
"I just want to say, when these young people are out here driving, you know, all this speeding and not driving like you're supposed to, this is what happens," Davis said. "Tragic accidents happen and it caused two of my sons -- one didn’t make it and the other is in serious condition."
It's unclear who was driving the car. The names of the other two victims killed in the crash haven't been released.
The family has set up a fund to help with funeral expenses. For more information, visit this GoFundMe page.
