HARPER WOODS, Mich. – A police cruiser crashed into a home Saturday afternoon in Harper Woods.
The impact of the crash on Woodland Street severely damaged the front end of the police car. It destroyed the front porch and bay window to a house as well.
Stephanie Russell was home two doors away when a Harper Woods police officer veered off the road at what appears to be high rate of speed.
"Look how many houses that is, one, two. One, two. It's scary," Russell said. "How do you lose control of your car? This is Harper Woods. It's small."
Police told Local 4 News the officer was not in pursuit and had just cleared a call.
"We don't know if it was a medical issue or what happened. He has no memory of what happened," Chief Jim Burke said.
Some how the 15-year veteran began to speed down the street, jumped the curb and crashed into the house.
"He's alert, conscious, surprisingly in good shape. Nothing major doctors have, but they will hold him overnight," Burke said.
The homeowner came home from a funeral to find her house falling apart. Thankfully she was not inside home at the time. The homeowner, investigators and neighbors all want to know exactly what happened moments before the crash.
"I still want to know why? Wouldn't you? If you came home and your home all busted up?" Russell said.
