DETROIT – The Detroit Public Schools district announced Wednesday testing has revealed 19 out of 62 buildings tested have elevated lead and copper levels in drinking water.
This is the first round of testing results. Here are those 19 schools:
- Beard Early Childhood
- Brown Academy
- Bunche ES
- Burton International Academy
- Carstens
- Clark Prep Academy
- Detroit Lions Academy
- Edison ES
- JR King
- Ludington MS
- Moses Field
- Sampson Webber
- Spain ES-MS
- Turning Point
- Vernor ES
- Warren Bow ES
- Thurgood Marshall
- Carver ES
- Priest ES
The district says testing began at the schools in the week of March 28, which was its Spring Break.
"Like every school district, DPS makes the health and safety of its students and staff its first priority. We are committed to ensuring that each of our schools provides an environment that is conducive to teaching and learning,” said DPS Transition Manager Judge Steven Rhodes in a news release. "The District has an obligation to ensure that our students and staff can focus all of their attention on what is most important – improved academic achievement. Proactively screening the water in our schools will help everyone stay focused on this goal."
The drinking water at five middle schools and 16 high schools will be tested next.
