Families lose homes when fire destroys Woodhaven apartment complex

No residents at Southpointe Square Apartments hurt in fire

WOODHAVEN, Mich. – A fire destroyed an 8-unit apartment building in Woodhaven Tuesday night, leaving several families without a home.

Residents at the Southpointe Square apartments on West Road told Local 4 some residents were forced to jump out windows to escape the flames, which started on the upper level and spread quickly.

"I started banging on the windows, tellin' everybody to get out. The policeman came and we trie to get out as many people as we could," witness Brad Baldwin said.

Another witness, Nick Chirumbolo said he grabbed a hose and some tools for firefighters.

"I was trying to help out as much as I could," Chirumbolo said.

Only one person had to be taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and contain it to the single building. The cause is still under investigation.
