Kalamazoo shooting rampage survivor says she doesn't hate gunman

Tiana Carruthers, 25, suffered multiple gunshot wounds

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The first person wounded during shootings by an Uber driver in Kalamazoo talked to the media for the first time on Thursday, saying she didn't hate the accused gunman.

"As far as the man who did this to me. For some reason, I do not hate him. I don't hate him at all," Tiana Carruthers said. "I'm am thinking that I might never know why ... but I know God knows why."

The 25-year-old suffered multiple gunshot wounds in the attack that left six people dead and a girl wounded.

Carruthers said she had needed reconstruction surgery on her arm and still has a bullet lodged in her liver.

"It's been a long road for me," she said. "Every day is hard, but I'm working on it."

She said she appreciated every card, meal and prayer that she received from the public.

"I'm trying to be the same person I was, but that is entirely impossible," she said.

Jason Dalton, 45, is charged with murder and attempted murder for the Feb. 20 attacks, which happened while Dalton was working as an Uber driver.

"I'm working on forgiving him the man who did this to me. I know it will be a process. Right now, I just wonder why. I am thinking that I might never know why ... but I know God knows why," Carruthers said.
