The 24-year-old was arrested at Hanna Street and 7 Mile Road about 1:30 a.m., Detroit police said.
Appling was in the backseat of his brother's vehicle when they were pulled over for speeding, police told Local 4 News.
Police said Appling tried hiding a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson gun under a car seat.
Appling was charged with carrying a concealed weapon in a motor vehicle. He is expected to be arraigned Sunday.
The arrest comes just six days before Appling was expected in court for a hearing on former weapons and drug charges.
Appling was arrested May 1 in the parking lot of a Dearborn strip club off Michigan Avenue. Police found a handgun, a small amount of suspected marijuana and a loaded AK-47 in the trunk of his car.
Local 4 was not able to make contact with Appling's lawyer in the Dearborn case, which is due back in court Friday.
Appling is a Detroit native who played basketball for Pershing High School and then MSU before spending last year with the Orlando Magic's Developmental League team.
There was no statement Saturday night from the Orlando Magic either on the future of Appling with that organization.
Appling went undrafted in the 2014 NBA draft.
