He’s a father, husband and Special Education Teacher for Oak Park High School, now Scott Turner of Berkley is learning how to read, write & walk again after suffering a traumatic brain injury falling from a ladder onto his driveway this past Memorial Day.
“Scott was on the ladder putting the cover back on our camper, something he did all the time,” said wife Lisa Turner. “I remember he asked me for something, I told him I would be right there because my hands were full with the 3 kids.”
Five or ten minutes later, Lisa remembers her 4 year old son needing something.
“So I said ok, let’s go find daddy and we walked around the side of the house and that’s when I saw my husband lying on the ground,” said Turner. “ I couldn’t even tell if he was breathing, I started screaming and because it was Memorial Day all of my neighbors were out, so they ran over and jumped in to help me.”
Scott was unconscious, was in a coma, and four days after the accident needed emergency surgery to remove part of his skull to relieve pressure from his brain.
“I lived with my husband for 2 months at the hospital while family stepped in to watch my 2, 4 and 6 year old,” said Turner. “He was on life support for ten days, in a coma for several weeks.”
When Scott eventually woke up he didn’t know who I was, he didn’t know who the kids were, he didn’t even recognize his identical twin brother.
Since the accident Lisa was forced to take an unpaid leave from her job at Ford Motor Company in order to provide round-the-clock care for Scott, as well as their three children but wouldn’t have it any other way.
“Taking care of him is my number one priority,” said Turner. “We’ve been married for 12 years, he’s the love of my life, it was love at first sight.”
Scott can’t be left alone, is unable to drive and his multiple therapy, doctors appointments every week. Lisa doesn’t know when she’ll be able to return to work, as the bread winner of the family, that frightens her.
“We’ve received so much support from our friends, family even complete strangers, it’s meant the world to us,” said Turner.
In order to raise funds for Scott’s medical expenses the Turner family is hosting a spaghetti dinner fundraiser with raffle & auction items Tuesday, August 30th at Three Blind Mice Irish Pub in Mt. Clemens.
