DETROIT – Detroit police have arrested a 21-year-old suspect after an officer was shot Monday night at a gas station on the city's east side.

A sergeant from the Detroit Police Department's 9th precinct was pursuing a shooting suspect when the shots were fired at the Sunoco gas station at 7 Mile Road and Hayes Street. The suspect was armed with a sawed-off shotgun.
The officer was struck in the shoulder and taken to Saint John Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He is undergoing surgery and is expected to be OK.
After a foot chase, police were able to take the suspect into custody. They recovered the shotgun.
Detroit Police Chief James Craig applauded his officers' bravery.
"Detroit police officers run toward the danger," he said.

The chief said this shooting was in connection to another shooting that happened Sunday -- a man was shot by his son on Dickerson Avenue.

“Through the years, I figured something like this was going to happen,” Sterling Cromer, the suspect’s father, said.
Cromer, 62, said his son shot him Sunday. He said there was no argument or disagreement that prompted the shooting.
“We were so busy talking,” Cromer said. “Who expects your child to come downstairs and shoot you?”
The suspect went to his parent’s home and allegedly shot his father in the foot with a sawed-off shotgun. A sawed-off shotgun was used in the shooting Monday night.
The parents were able to escape the home while the shooter was trying to reload.
“I apologize for what my son did to him and I hope he has a speedy recovery,” Cromer said.
