Detroit is known for producing some of the greatest talent in the music business. It should come as no surprise that two up-and-coming rap artists who have recently released a chart-topping song are right here in the D.
The two teens who make up Zay and are from the city’s east side are the faces behind the newest dance craze currently on the music scene.
The song is called “Juju on dat beat,” and in just 40 days, it has reached more than 100 million views on social media.
When asked how the dance came to be, 17-year-old Zay Hilfiger simply said, “I came up with it.”
"I was at his house like, man we got to do this instrumental! He was like 'That instrumental? Alright.' And I just straight free-styled. Like I ain't write nothing down. Nothing was actually wrote down except that JuJu on that Beat part. It was just in my head."
He and Zayion McCall recorded the song in just minutes from their own home on a laptop. After they uploaded the video, the pair said the song just took off on its own.
"We didn't think it was going to do the numbers that it did now," Hilfiger said.
The teens are managed by their father, Timothy McCall, who is also a local movie producer and makes sure the boys stay grounded throughout their newfound fame.
"They're not talking about anything derogatory. No race issues. They're just having fun!" McCall said.
The teens will appear on Ellen’s Halloween special Monday night. They also recorded a handful of new songs for their upcoming album. No official release date has been set.
