YPSILANTI, Mich. – Jamari Moore's mother gathered with friends and family Thursday to remember her son.
The group met outside the same building where 3-year-old Jamari Moore died. But the family insisted the meeting wasn't about pointing blame in the accident.
"I'm not pointing blame on anybody," said Alisha Moore, Jamari's mother.
On Sunday, Alisha Moore brought Jamari to a friend's apartment in Ypsilanti. Somehow, another child got ahold of a loaded gun. Moore had just left the room where Jamari and some others were playing.
"She had just sat down -- roughly two minutes later, she heard this 'pop' noise," family member Lena Johnston said.
A 10-year-old boy pulled the trigger, and a bullet pierced Jamari, killing him instantly.
"Yes, this was an accident -- a tragic, horrible accident," Alisha Moore said.
This family is grieving, but relatives are also reflecting on the joy Jamari brought. On Thursday, they dressed as his favorite animated characters.
"He was the happiest kid," Alisha Moore said. "He was so silly and so goofy. As you can see, we all rocked our Ninja Turtles."
The family wants Jamari's death to serve as reminder to parents.
"You need to know whose house you're going to and ascertain the dangers your children are exposed to," said Jermaine Johnston, the family's pastor.
Jamari's mother said she's truly relying on her faith in this difficult time, and she's comforted by the people who came out Thursday night. But she has to stay strong for her four other children, she said.
The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with funeral costs.
