INKSTER, Mich. – A former Inkster police officer who was locked up for the violent beating of a driver during a traffic stop wants out of jail after being convicted 12 months ago.
"I am truly sorry if you feel my actions were unjust," William Melendez said at sentencing. "Please, have faith in your police officers, for many of them would risk their lives for yours."
Melendez was sentenced to 13 months to 10 years for the beating of Floyd Dent. He is eligible for parole Dec. 15.
In his file obtained by the Detroit News, Melendez said he suffers from PTSD after his days in the military and said he doesn't know why he did what he did.
After reflecting, he said he "handled the situation poorly" and thought he was protecting his fellow officers.
Local 4 legal expert Neil Rockind said Melendez's words aren't convincing.
"Blaming post-traumatic stress or denying and can't figure out the reason you beat this man does not bode very well for him," Rockind said.
Melendez said if he is released, he will move back home with his wife and run a private security business.
"I have serious and grave concerns with Mr. Melendez participating in any form of security," Rockind said.
In the file, at least one parole board member objected to Melendez's release, writing, "Mr. Melendez's lack of understanding of his criminal behavior is unacceptable."
Prosecutor Kym Worthy said Melendez "was a police officer who abused his authority." She asked the board to deny parole.
If the parole board elects to release Melendez, the Wayne County prosecutor could appeal a parole-board decision. It would go to the Circuit Court civil side.
