3 killed in 40-car pileup near Fowlerville

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, Mich. – Michigan State Police provided an update to Thursday morning’s crash on I-96 near Fowlerville saying the cause was most likely weather related.

The westbound lanes of the interstate are shut down between M-52 and M-59. The eastbound lanes have reopened.

Authorities said there were whiteout conditions and it is unclear which vehicle initially started the chain reaction.

The pileup involved up to 40 vehicles and three people were killed. There were 11 people taken to area hospitals with nonlife-threatening injuries.

It is unclear when either direction of the interstate will be reopened to traffic.

MSP said it appears alcohol was not a factor in the crash. An accident investigation is underway.
