Detroit girl, 9, dies after routine tonsillectomy

A mother has been left with questions and heartbreak after her 9-year-old daughter died after what was supposed to be a routine tonsillectomy.

Anyialah Greer went to Children’s Hospital in Troy last month to have her tonsils removed.

The 40-minute procedure took doctors three hours due to bleeding complications during surgery.

Sonia Gambrell said her daughter came out of surgery lethargic and unresponsive.

Gambrell said they released Anyialah despite her groggy condition.

While on the way to retrieve a prescription, Anyialah died in the back seat.

“She was just slumped over,” Gambrell said. “She was just cold. My child is supposed to bury me. I’m not supposed to bury my child at all, period.”

Autopsy results are pending and are expected to be released in the next few weeks.

Children’s Hospital said it’s deeply saddened by Anyialah death.

Gambrell has since hired an attorney.
