Lake Orion police officer crashes into home after falling asleep at wheel, police say

Officer sustained minor injuries

LAKE ORION, Mich. – A Lake Orion police officer crashed into the side of a home after falling asleep while driving early Saturday morning, police said.

The crash happened on East Flint Street near Washington Street in Lake Orion.

Police said the 24-year veteran officer was traveling east on East Flint Street when he lost control of his vehicle and struck the side of a home. The officer checked on the residents inside the home, who were uninjured.

The officer involved was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Inside the home were a husband, wife and a 1-year-old child. The officer hit the side of the home which is near the child’s room, but the child was not injured. The car the officer was driving was totaled in the crash.

Chief  Jerry Narsh of the Lake Orion Police Department said the officer is the ultimate professional and is heartbroken over the incident.

The officer involved in the crash was said to be extremely apologetic and is fully cooperating with investigators.
