Major $60M reconstruction project planned for Hall Road in Macomb County

3.7-mile project will take at least a year and a half, officials say

MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – Spring isn't the only season that's just around the corner in Metro Detroit. Construction season is almost here, and right out of the gate, Macomb County plans to deal with a major project on Hall Road that will affect multiple communities.

The project will take a minimum of "a little longer than a year and a half," officials said. But as many drivers know, the road desperately needs to be fixed.

A 3.7-mile stretch of M-59, or Hall Road, will undergo a total reconstruction. The Michigan Department of Transportation is investing $60 million to do it.

"I would say many drivers that take that route understand why we have to do it," MDOT spokesperson Diane Cross said. "They themselves have a tough ride with the potholes and just the condition of the roadway. Everyone knows it needs work."

Starting next month, work will begin from Van Dyke to west of Garfield Road. In 2018, the construction will continue to Romeo Plank Road.

"Part of the beauty of this particular project is we are removing all of that concrete and replacing it with asphalt," Cross said. "Part of the reason for that is that asphalt can be maintained easier, cheaper and faster."

Crews will work day and night, with three lanes open in both directions from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

"There will always be access to a business," Cross said. "We will make sure there will always be at least one way to get into a mall, a shopping center or a hospital or school. We will always have access open."

Hundreds of businesses will be affected. The stretch of road sees 90,000 drivers per day, which is more than some freeways get.

It's been a couple of decades since major work has been done on the road.
