DDOT driver attacked on bus in Downtown Detroit

Bus crashes near Rosa Parks Transit Center; driver OK

DETROIT – Detroit Transit Police are investigating an assault on a Detroit Department of Transportation bus driver this morning.

The DDOT driver was assaulted on the bus which caused him to drive the bus onto the sidewalk area at the Rosa Parks Transit Center. One person has been taken into police custody.

The driver was taken to a hospital for treatment. He suffered minor injuries and is expected to be OK.

Witnesses said the driver was sitting in the bus driver's seat when he was attacked. They described an intense struggle in which at one point the driver had the suspect in a head lock. He wrestled him to the ground.

Witnesses said the suspect was saying strange things when he was handcuffed.

"He came back through the door and said he was sorry," said witness Roderick Taylor. "He went on mumbling and murmuring and said, this is what he said: He wanted to see someone at his feet cut open, bleeding."

There was no weapon used during the attack.

The bus route is still in service. The bus was replaced by another. Route 19 will not be affected.
