Church sign in Clinton Township stirs controversy

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A sign outside a church in Clinton Township has sparked controversy because it sends the message that homosexuality is wrong.

The sign in front of the Family Worship Church of God says, “We love the homosexual enough to tell them know they’re wrong.”

The pastor who works with the church said it wasn’t meant to be offensive and he didn’t think the sign would get this much attention.

“We do have the homosexual community that does come to our church,” said Pastor Greg Casto. “And we do welcome everyone.”

The sign, some say, suggests that the message is unwelcoming.

Casto said many are missing the actual message of the sign.

“If this bible is totally true, which we believe that it is, then we don't want them to face an everlasting torment, same thing with adulterers, fornicators, and thieves,” Casto said.

When Curtis Lipscomb with LGBT Detroit saw the sign, he didn’t think that the church seemed very welcoming to the community.

“I don't see many signs like that in most faith institutions; so when I see something that is disturbing, I question the intent of the ministry”

Casto said the sign was put up by an older church member, and he didn’t realize the sign was up until he started receiving feedback. He also said he didn’t mean to hurt anyone, but that he stands by his faith.

“I’m sorry I offended or the church offended any person, but I'm not sorry for defending the word of God,” he said.

The church switches out its sign every two weeks, but the church decided to take it down a day early.
