DETROIT – A 32-year-old woman was killed Sunday when she was shot in the head by someone who fired up to 15 rounds in her direction, police said.
The victim’s family identified the woman as Carmell Smith.
Smith was not the likely target of the shooting, said the victim’s sister, Jasmine Kidd.
Smith was with her boyfriend of two years at a home on Penrod Street, which is where the boyfriend’s mother lives, Kidd said.
The couple were in a car when the shooter pulled up and began firing.
Kidd admitted there was some “drama” with Smith’s boyfriend, but said it had nothing to do with Smith.
Smith died before she could be taken to a hospital, the Detroit Police Department said.
Officers responded to 7310 Penrod St. about 5:30 p.m. The suspected shooter was in a black SUV at the time, police said.
The person responsible drove up alongside the couple’s gray Pontiac Grand Am, where Smith was sitting on the driver’s side, and fired the shots, police said.
The driver then took off, heading south on Penrod Street to Warren Avenue. From there, it’s not clear where he or she went.
The investigation continues.
