He started as a firefighter and served for 19 years before being promoted to sergeant and then to lieutenant. As lieutenant, his duties included overseeing the operation of Fire Station #2 at 13 Mile Road and Woodward Avenue.
Assistant Fire Chief Jim Cook, who acted as interim chief after Thomas left, recommended him for the position.
He will oversee three fire stations, 56 firefighters and a $13 million budget.
“Fire service is in my blood,” said Cummins. His father, Lloyd Cummins, was a Detroit firefighter for 31 years.
In his spare time he enjoys hunting, fishing and sports. He and his wife Dawn have two children, Evan, 18, and Vanessa, 15.
