68-year-old Ohio woman killed when semi-truck payload crushes her car on US-23 near Dundee

Janet Rheinecker pronounced dead at scene

SUMMERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 68-year-old Sylvania, Ohio, woman was killed Monday in a crash on southbound U.S. 23 in Summerfield Township, police said.

Investigators said Jeffrey Bowling, 54, of Gibsonburg, Ohio, was driving a semi-truck in the right lane when he rear-ended a trailer that was being pulled by a Ford F-350 pickup truck.

The pickup truck had stopped on the road due to construction. When the semi-truck hit the pickup truck, the pickup truck hit a Lexus that was stopped in front of it, police said.

The Lexus was forced into two semi-trucks that were also stopped due to the construction. Officials said a semi-truck's payload fell from the trailer and crushed the car.

The driver of the Lexus, Janet Rheinecker, was pronounced dead at the scene.

There were no other injuries in the crash, police said.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

All southbound lanes of U.S. 23 were closed for several hours due to the cleanup effort. Officials said they have reopened, but two lanes are shut down nearby due to another crash.

The crash is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 734-240-7493.
