Truck driver held after 2 die in Michigan crash on US-23

Man charged with committing moving violation causing the death of another person

GREEN OAK TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Two men died and one woman remains in critical condition after a multivehicle crash on U.S. 23 at Lee and Silver Lake roads in Green Oak Township Sunday, police said.

Police said emergency responders arrived at the crash to find nine vehicles involved and three people entrapped.

The Green Oak Charter Township Police Department said the driver of the semitruck, a 62-year-old man, failed to stop as he approached vehicles that were stopped on U.S. 23. As a result, he struck numerous vehicles and came to a rest on top of a 1997 Ford Escort, trapping both occupants of the vehicle.

Inside the Focus was a 51-year-old man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 25-year-old woman, who was extricated from the car and taken to University of Michigan Hospital. She remains in critical condition.

Police said a 52-year-old man in a Chevy Sonic was also extricated from his vehicle but was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the other people involved in the crash suffered either minor or no injuries during the crash.

The 62-year-old semitruck driver was taken to Livingston County Jail and charged with committing a moving violation causing the death of another person.

Southbound U.S. 23 at Lee Road was closed for about seven hours.

The crash remains under investigation.
