32-year-old man accused in deadly abuse of 9-month-old girl in Monroe County

Justin Davis charged with first-degree child abuse

IDA TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 32-year-old man from Ida Township was arrested Monday in connection with the fatal abuse of a 9-month-old girl in Monroe County.

Monroe County Sheriff Dale Malone said deputies were called Saturday to a home in the 3000 block of Lewis Avenue on a report of an infant girl having trouble breathing.

Ida firefighters went to the home and took Kingsley Elizabeth Schwartz to ProMedica Toledo Hospital.

Kingsley was taken to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit with life-threatening injuries. Doctors said her injuries are consistent with abuse.

She was pronounced dead at 4:08 p.m. Monday at ProMedica Toledo Hospital. Officials announced her death around 6 p.m.

Justin Davis arrested

Deputies investigated the incident and arrested Justin Charles Davis, who is not related to the victim, but was caring for her at the time of the incident, police said.

"Justin Davis killed my niece," Stephanie Metzger said. "He shook her to death."

Police said Kingsley's mother dropped her off at Davis' home in Ida while she went to work.

Davis was charged with first-degree child abuse. He was arraigned in First District Court and is being held on $500,000 bail.

Officials said the child-abuse charge could become murder.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Mike Preadmore at 734-240-7719.
