DETROIT – A 31-year-old mother faces murder charges in the fatal stabbing of her 1-year-old son in Southwest Detroit.
Shaquittea Denice Reese-Bethea, of Detroit, was charged with first-degree murder, torture and first-degree child abuse.

The Wayne County Medical Examiner ruled Jerrick Jefferson's death a homicide. The cause of death was listed as multiple stab wounds.
ORIGINAL REPORT: Mother arrested in deadly stabbing of 1-year-old boy in Southwest Detroit
The incident happened at an apartment complex Tuesday night in the 3600 block of West Vernor Highway, near West Grand Bloulevard.
According to police, the woman called 911 and said she was going to kill herself and that there were dead people in her apartment. When officers arrived, they found her in the hallway with serious injuries making alarming statements.
“I heard her yell, ‘Get the thing out the room, get the thing out of here,’” Lawrence Hughes, a resident in the apartment complex, said.
Police said the woman told them there was a dead child in the apartment.
Officers searched the apartment and found the boy fatally stabbed. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The woman is in temporary serious condition at a hospital. Police said she tried to kill herself.
Hughes says the woman recently went through a break up with her boyfriend and was upset.
Reese-Bethea is expected to be arraigned Friday from her hospital bed.
