School of choice students at Wyandotte elementary forced to change schools due to overcrowding

8 kindergarten students to be moved

WYANDOTTE, Mich. – Eight kindergarten students at Garfield Elementary in Wyandotte who are school of choice students are being moved to another school because of overcrowding.

Parents were notified Thursday night the students will be moved Monday to Monroe Elementary.

"We have been here three times -- orientation, kindergarten round up, meet the teacher... And we started school," said Linda Whitenburg, whose grandson will be switched to a new school.

When students are approved for the school of choice program, families receive paperwork that says the students could be moved to another classroom or school if there is overcrowding.

"When we saw class sizes of 33 in kindergarten, we knew we couldn't keep it that way," Wyandotte Public Schools Superintendent Catherine Cost said. "That's just heartbreaking because you're going to end up making changes that are hard for any family, let alone a child who's five."

The students met with their new principal Friday, and they will begin at the new school Monday.
