FARMINGTON, Mich. – A Farmington doctor was sentenced Wednesday to one year in prison for conspiring to illegally distribute prescription pills and defraud Medicare, officials announced.

Carlos Godoy, 80, is accused of committing the crimes while working at a clinic owned by Boris Zigmond in Oak Park.

Godoy admitted in court documents that he wrote prescriptions that were medically unnecessary, officials said.

Godoy is accused of issuing 13,500 doses of Oxycodone and 15,000 doses of Hydrocodone over a 13-month period.

"More people die in America every year from prescription drug overdoses than from overdoses of all other drugs combined," Acting U.S. Attorney Daniel Lemisch said. "In addition, prescription drug addiction has led to a resurgence in heroin use. Physicians who divert prescription drugs to the street market are contributing to this epidemic, and we are focusing our enforcement efforts on stopping them."

Zigmond and another physician, Jennifer Franklin, pleaded guilty for their participation in the scheme. They are awaiting sentencing.
