MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. – The animal shelter in Madison Heights can normally hold 15 cats at a time but is currently caring for over 100.
Police were called to a home on Hecht Street, near 12 Mile and John R Roads, due to an overwhelming odor. A search warrant was executed and authorities found a 58-year-old man living with at least 115 cats.
Officers continue to go to the home wearing ventilators borrowed from the fire department. More cats seem to be found each day.
Police said the cats were in extremely poor condition, heavily flea infested and using the entire house as a litter box. Several deceased cats and kittens were found in the home. Some were found in buckets in the garage.
“I can’t fathom how you can live and breathe,” Madison Heights Police Chief Corey Haines said.
Steven Kwasiborski was charged with one count of animal cruelty to 10 or more animals.
The Madison Heights Police Department coordinated with the Oakland County Animal Shelter to remove the animals and have each cat checked by a licensed veterinarian.
“Right now it’s about having enough funding to pay for all the medical issues,” Haines said.
Madison Heights Animal Shelter is also in need of food and litter. Donations can be dropped off at the shelter.
Rescue facilities are still needed that will accept some of these cats. Please contact the Madison Heights Animal Shelter at 248-837-2784.
