DETROIT – Police are searching for a woman who escaped from custody while officers attended to a felon who had a medical emergency in Southwest Detroit.
Police said the woman was in handcuffs when she was able to escape near Fort and Dragoon streets because of a wild turn of events at the scene.
It began when officers pulled over a white car at a gas station in the area because the driver was wanted on a felony charge of breaking and entering.
While police were dealing with him, a woman walked into the gas station store and spoke to the clerk. A man walked in with a gas can, and the woman started berating him.
Video shows the woman throwing punches near the door of the gas station. Police saw the altercation and took the woman into custody. She was placed in handcuffs and taken back into the store.
Meanwhile, the felon who was originally stopped in the white car went into cardiac arrest. While the two police officers were dealing with the man in medical distress, the woman walked away.
Helicopters and patrol vehicles from the Detroit Police Department, Michigan State Police, Border Patrol and Department of Homeland Security are scouring the area.
