MILFORD, Mich. – An anonymous donor dropped a rare coin with an estimated worth of almost $300 into a Salvation Army red kettle at a Kroger store in Milford.
A 1980 South African gold Krugerrand was found in the kettle at the store on Highland Avenue. This is the fifth year that one of the coins has been put in the kettles, though in the past it was dropped in the kettle at a St. Clair Shores Kroger.
It's unknown if the donor is the same person or someone different.
The money from the coin donation and other donations will be used to provide coats to children, send children to a summer camp, reconnect families through a drug rehabilitation and treatment program, and more.
The campaign has a goal of $7.85 million this year. Donations can be made at red kettles or by visiting salmich.org, texting SALMICH to 41444, calling 877-SAL-MICH, or sending a check or money order, made payable to The Salvation Army, to 16130 Northland Dr., Southfield, MI 48075.
