DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. – A Detroit homeowner shot a suspected package thief Friday outside a party store in Dearborn Heights.
Police said the Detroit man got in his vehicle and followed a man to a party store at West Warren Avenue and Rockdale after he saw him steal a package from his porch.
The suspected thief went into the store. When he came out, he was confronted by the homeowner, who jumped out of his SUV and opened fire.
"The guy held him down in the street until police came, and when police came he said, 'I have my CPL,' and cops disarmed the guy and put him in handcuffs, and [an] ambulance took the kid who got shot," a witness said.
Police said it's unclear if the suspected thief also had a weapon.
The shooter is in custody while police investigate to determine if he acted in self-defense or recklessly.
