Trenton officer uses kayak to save woman after witnessing her car sinking in Detroit River

A Trenton police officer pulled a woman out of a car sinking in the Detroit River, police said. (WDIV)

TRENTON, Mich. – A Trenton police officer saved a woman Monday after seeing her car sinking in the Detroit River.  

The incident happened around 4 p.m. near the corner of West Road and Riverside Drive in Trenton, police said.

According to police, an officer saw a woman in the car as it was sinking and floating downriver. The officer found a kayak in a neighbor's yard.

He got in the kayak and paddled to the car. The officer used the paddle to smash the window. The woman grabbed the paddle and was able to get out of the vehicle. 

She got onto the kayak and the officer paddled back to shore. 

Trenton Fire EMS took the woman to a local hospital. The officer was treated at the scene.
