TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – A former Michigan teacher was found dead in the Dominican Republic after an apparent armed robbery in her apartment.

Patricia Anton, 63, was found bound, gagged and strangled to death in her apartment on the north side of the island Tuesday, WPBN reports. It appears to be part of a burglary because her phone, laptop and television were missing.

Anton went to the Dominican Republic in 2014 to teach at a Montessori school. Before then, Anton taught upper elementary students at The Children’s House just outside Traverse City. She was known for taking students on camping trips and helping sixth graders start a business.

“She cared so deeply about the children and I knew that here, when she was teacher here and I knew that just through the stories she told. She was such a vital part of that community and they cared about her and loved her so much,” said Michele Shane, the Head of School at The Children’s House. “I hope that people think about the beautiful life she led and remember her for the passion that she had for education and the champion that she was for children,” said Shane.
