Man faces 10 felonies for shooting girlfriend after argument over their relationship, police say

DETROIT – A Clinton Township man is facing 10 felony charges after police say he shot his girlfriend in front of their small child after an argument about their relationship. A 25-year-old Mount Clemens woman spoke with Macomb County deputies around 7:40 p.m. Tuesday about a fight with her boyfriend police said.

Woman set on fire charges

William Gary Helmer appeared emotionless in court Thursday, showing no remorse after allegedly setting a 63-year-old woman on fire as she left her Redford Township job. Dorothy Spinella was set on fire Saturday outside a Coney Island restaurant in the 25800 block of 7 Mile Road.

Pit bull training

Emma Hernandez was just playing near her Detroit home when she was mauled to death by dogs over the summer. When dog trainer Steve Liggens, the owner of Motor City K-9 Solutions, heard about the mauling, he decided it was time do something.

Demolition program

Help Me Hank is getting answers from Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan about the potential big hit facing the city’s demolition program. City officials put contractors on notice that the demolition of blighted homes and structures might be significantly scaled back unless City Council members support the upcoming demolition bond.

School shooting

A student pulled a gun from his backpack and opened fire at a Southern California high school Thursday, killing two students and wounding three others before shooting himself in the head on his 16th birthday, authorities said.

1984 murder

Police have been investigating the murder of 16-year-old Michelle Jackson since Jan. 25, 2984. Kennith Dupree is accused of rape and murder in a case that was one of the first taken up by the University of Michigan’s Innocence Project. It was an emotional day for Jackson’s family. Some of her family members were hearing details of her death for the first time and others were reliving it.

Don Barden

A street on Detroit’s west side was named after business titan Don Barden. Barden worked his way up to build one of the nation’s largest black-owned businesses. His legacy can be seen all over the city.
