Man rescued from trench in backyard of Detroit home after several hours

DETROIT – Crews worked for several hours Monday to rescue a man who became trapped in a trench in the backyard of a Detroit home Monday.

“He is conscious and he is talking to us, but this can deteriorate pretty rapidly,” Dave Fornell, Deputy Commissioner with the Detroit Fire Department said.

Fire crews arrived on scene around 4:15 p.m. to a home on University Place, near Harper Avenue and Cadieux Road. The man was removed and transported to a hospital around 9:30 p.m.

Officials said the man was alive when they removed him from the trench. He was transported to a nearby hospital. He is in his 50s, according to officials.

The man and a crew had been working in that backyard most of Monday. The Trench Rescue Squad was on scene.
